The biggest thing I didn’t particularly appreciate was being strung along for the architect/senior type positions. Looking at the positions from a consultants perspective would have bored the shit out of me.
Also, while in this position, wrote 2 proof of concepts that converted cobol into native jvm stuff. I had already written a pascal to native jvm compiler, so that was easy enough. Upon suggesting this, I was told it wasn’t possible. Hinted that the solution was about a 15 minute drive away, I just got strange looks or got told ‘this is that ego of yours again, cut that shit out’.
I would later find out I was in a very real sense, threatening their jobs. Disrupt that market of cobol mess with a solution were they’re not needed anymore, and you’ll get some pissed off or self-defensive answers. Again, not my intention.. I just want to help out and build cool shit. Upon suggesting antlr to the lead architect for generating the to-be-coded modules, he mentioned he was doing the same thing but simpler, and that antlr was fine when it would become more complex.
I hoped he’d signal my manager as indication that I simply had more brains than evident so far, but that remained silent. So much for that communicative corporate culture. The final straw was having to talk around introducing sonarqube for security related crap for several weeks. I still don’t see why just installing it and pushing it into the same jenkins pipeline I had already introduced would introduce trouble. My best guess is that an architect would have to ‘ok’ that, for some reason. So much for self-steering development teams. SAFE is really a giant pile of bullshit ;) This wasn’t going anywhere and I was going to need to find some other place of employment.
Also was called unprofessional for studying like a madman for my OCP in my last month for my new job. The fact this had given me a new goal, an environment that seemed faster paced than this one, my various attempts to make the entire employment there work by basically taking the lead and introducing new concepts into teams, volunteering for the security group and still mentioning ‘.. I’m not being used optimally.. I’m still bored”, didn’t particularly take for some reason. They labeld it as ego and wanted to see emotion. Sigh. (pharmapartners)
